Development of Dual Polarization Aviation Weather Products for the Faa*
نویسندگان
چکیده
In the United States, the WSR-88D (NEXRAD) Doppler weather radar network will be upgraded with a dual polarization capability (Istok et al., 2009) beginning in late 2010. This will allow for type characterization of bulk scatterers (hydrometeor classification) in addition to the standard radar moments. Knowing which scatterers dominate a radar return offers physical insight into underlying atmospheric processes. The dual polarization NEXRAD will be fielded with a hydrometeor classifier algorithm (Park et al., 2009), known as HCA. It was developed primarily to improve radar-based quantitative precipitation estimates. Classification of both meteorological and non-meteorological (birds, insects, ground clutter) scatterers will be possible.

Improving Weather Radar Data Quality for Aviation Weather Needs*
A fundamental function of any aviation weather system is to provide accurate and timely weather information tailored to the specific air traffic situations for which a system is designed. Weather location and intensity are of prime importance to such systems. Knowledge of the weather provides “nowcasting” functionality in the terminal and en route air spaces. It also is used as input into aviat...

Regular operation of weather radar mandates frequent calibration to ensure accurate measurements. Even modest calibration errors in reflectivity factor Z and differential reflectivity ZDR may produce severe deficiencies in the quality of radar products such as rainfall estimates and hydrometeor classes. Radar users, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), rely on high quality weath...

Hazardous weather in the terminal area is the major cause of aviation system delays as well as a principal cause of air carrier accidents. Several systems currently under development will provide significant increases in terminal safety. However, these systems will not make a major impact on weather-induced delays in the terminal area, meet a number of the safety needs, such as information to s...
متن کاملQuantifying Delay Reduction Benefits for Aviation Convective Weather Decision Support Systems*
Benefits quantification and NAS performance assessment have become very important topics for the aviation weather community. In an era of significant federal government and airline budget austerity for civil aviation investments, it is essential to quantitatively demonstrate delay reduction benefits of improved weather decision support systems. Major FAA initiatives stress the importance of qua...

n Flight delays are now a major problem in the U.S. National Airspace System. A significant fraction of these delays are caused by reductions in en route capacity due to severe convective weather. The Corridor Integrated Weather System (CIWS) is a fully automated weather analysis and forecasting system designed to support the development and execution of convective weather impact mitigation pla...
